Main duties and responsibilities
- To assess the suitability of the technical content and quality of submissions to Electronics Letters;
- To select and invite appropriately qualified referees;
- To make final decisions on refereed papers and ensure that an appropriate amount of content is provided for each issue within the production timescales;
- To proactively increase the pool of referees and ensure that the referee database is regularly maintained and updated;
- To undertake research to identify changes in the field and assist the managing editor with the development of the journal;
- To assist the managing editor with the promotion of Electronics Letters including liaising with the scientific community and event/conference attendance;
- To undertake any other duties and projects at the request of the line manager;
- To be familiar with the health and safety and fire policies for the organisation and to attend mandatory updates where required.
Person specification
Essential criteria
- Science/physics/engineering graduate (ideally PhD or MSc level);
- Ability to recognise key areas and arguments of scientific papers for the purpose of choosing appropriately qualified referees;
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with strong customer focus;
- Excellent time management skills; must demonstrate ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritise workload;
- Tact, diplomacy, networking and negotiating skills, especially in communicating with authors and referees;
- Analytical skills, particularly in pre-filtering papers and selecting referees;
- An attitude that actively seeks continuous self-development and ways of doing things better. Must participate voluntarily and be able to work at a sustained, fast pace with minimum supervision;
- A high degree of literacy and numeracy, plus experience of using computers for email, internet research, information retrieval, file manipulation and word processing.
Desirable
- Knowledge/experience of science, technical and medical (STM) publishing.
