Stage four: decision

Information about how a decision is reached and communicated to registration applicants

Decisions on all applications for professional registration are made by a registration panel. Stage four of the process forms the third and final peer review assessment and will usually follow the professional review interview (for CEng and IEng applicants).

Registration panel decisions

The registration panel is formed from members of the IET who are themselves registered, and who have been appointed and trained by the IET to carry out this role.

The registration panel will review all the evidence relating to an application, which will include the application form, the professional review interview report, and any reports from your sponsor/supporter, in order to effect a decision.

You will be notified of the registration panel’s decision, by letter, within six weeks of the interview. Should there be any delay, your registration coordinator will keep you advised.

Accepted applications

A letter will be sent to you, it will include a diploma application form, as well as details of any subscription or ECUK registration fees, if required.

ECUK registration

Registration with the ECUK usually takes place between three to six weeks after you have paid any ECUK registration fees requested in your acceptance letter. The ECUK will inform you of your unique ECUK registration number. Please note that any requested fees for ECUK registration must be paid before registration can be finalised.

Declined applications

If your application is declined, you will receive a letter explaining the decision, and information about your local professional registration advisor who will be able to provide support and advice..

Appeals procedure

If your application is declined and after consulting your professional registration advisor, you remain unhappy with the decision, there is an appeals procedure which offers an independent review of your application. The fee for this review is £100, refundable if your appeal is successful. Appeals should be made in writing to the manager of registration and standards.
