Stage two: peer assessment

Describes what peer assessors look for in your registration application

Your overall competence will be assessed holistically by peer review at the time you apply for professional registration, in accordance with the current Engineering Council UK-SPEC regulations.

Applications are typically reviewed by three or four registered members of the IET, trained for purpose, who form an assessment panel. The members of the panel will be specifically selected for the application that they are assessing and will usually have background knowledge of your field of work.

What is the panel assessing?

When assessing CEng & IEng applications, the panel is asked to reach one of the following decisions:

  1. There is sufficient evidence of competence (including underpinning knowledge and understanding) to justify moving to interview.
  2. There is some evidence of competence (including underpinning knowledge and understanding) which might be probed further at the professional review interview.

  3. There is insufficient evidence of competence (and / or underpinning knowledge and understanding) but the application indicates the applicant might have more gained through work based experience. The assessors will request further information from the candidate through the registration coordinator.

  4. There clearly is insufficient evidence of competence (and / or underpinning knowledge and understanding), to justify moving to interview. In such cases the assessors will provide you with a detailed recommendation.

When assessing EngTech applications, the panel is asked to reach one of the following decisions:

  1. The candidate is of the correct standard to be approved for EngTech registration with no further action.

  2. The candidate is required to provide further information, as specified. In this instance, once the requested information has been received, this is sent out again to the assessment panel.

  3. The candidate should proceed to interview. In this instance, the assessors are asked to indicate which competences require further investigation. Applications from candidates who have attended an interview are then sent out for final assessment by the registration panel.

  4. There is insufficient evidence of competence/UKU to justify proceeding. The assessors are requested to provide a more complex recommendation in this instance.
