Inter-Institutional Health and Safety Group

Co-ordinating the efforts of the engineering institutions in common areas of health and safety policy.

The Inter-Institutional Group on Health and Safety (the IIG) is made up of representatives (members and staff) from the IET, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, and the Institution of Chemical Engineers. It also has representatives from the Hazards Forum, the Engineering Council UK, the HSE, IOSH, the Safety & Reliability Society, and the Ergonomics Society.

The IIG is currently working on three key areas of interest to the Institutions and has created working groups made up of  experts from industry and academia to tackle these important issues:

Risk teaching

Promote the teaching of health and safety risk to undergraduate engineers in the UK through the provision of flexible teaching materials that could be incorporated into engineering courses.
The IIG is working with the Health and Safety Executive to produce a software package that will demonstrate their e-learning concept. A report outlining the proposals  has been published by the Health & Safety Executive.

Occupational health

To increase the understanding of occupational health issues within the engineering profession.  Members of this working group include occupational health experts from the medical profession.
The working group has produced the following:

PDF Inter institutional group on health and safety strategy document (25 k) Updated February 2007
PDF The case for considering occupational health (47 k) Updated February 2007

Safety culture

Promoting the benefits of a good safety culture within companies and organisations.   The group help to set up an event on safety culture that was run by the Hazards Forum.  Please read the following report (reproduced by kind permission of the Hazards Forum).

PDF Achieving a good safety culture - the people dimension (3150 k) Updated February 2007
